خلاصه داستان: سال 1935. برايوني تاليس فرزند 13 ساله خانواده اي مرفه شاهد مغازله خواهر بزرگ ترش سسيليا با رابي ترنر، فرزند تحصيل کرده يکي از خدمتکاران شان است. برداشت هاي غلط و کودکانه برايوني از اين رابطه عاشقانه پاک و علاقه غير منطقي اش به رابي که از سوي وي رد مي شود، راه را براي سوء تفاهم و فاجعه اي بزرگ باز مي کند. مدتي بعد، پس از آزار جنسي يکي از بستگان خانواده، برايوني نزد پليس شهادت مي دهد که رابي ترنر اين کار را کرده و سبب دستگيري و زنداني شدن او مي شود. وقتي جنگ دوم جهاني آغاز مي شود، رابي براي جنگ عازم جبهه شده و سسيليا نيز که همچنان عاشق اوست، خانه را ترک و در لندن ساکن مي شود. برايوني که خود مي داند با شهادت دروغ زندگي رابي و خواهرش را نابود کرده، ابتدا براي کفاره پس دادن داوطلب شغل پرستاري مي شود. اما ديدن رنج ديگران کافي نيست و تصميم مي گيرد تا به ديدار سسيليا رفته و از او پوزش بخواهد. اما ديگر دير شده است....
